Takapuna Electrician

Offices, retail and hospitality

Commercial electrician for Takapuna businesses

Takapuna is one of Auckland's key metropolitan centres and it works hard: offices, the shops and restaurants of Hurstmere Road, and the Shore City shopping centre. We look after the electrical side for businesses here, from a single shop refit to power, lighting and data across a whole office floor.

A town centre built for business

Takapuna has been a place of work for a long time. After the Harbour Bridge opened, the suburb became the main North Shore centre for the offices of government departments, and big retailers followed. Today Auckland Council's centre plan describes Takapuna as an important employment, entertainment, shopping and residential area, zoned as a metropolitan centre, and a group of local businesses has promoted it under the name Techapuna as a home for IT firms. The Smales Farm office park is part of Takapuna too.

That mix shows up in the electrical work. An office floor wants clean power and data at every desk, lighting that staff can work under all day and a switchboard with room to grow. A shop wants its display lighting and tills running from the moment the doors open. A restaurant or bar needs its kitchen, refrigeration and lighting circuits to hold up through a busy Friday night.

Commercial electrical work we do

Fit-outs and alterations

New circuits, power to workstations and meeting rooms, kitchenette wiring and changes to suit a new layout or a new tenant.

Lighting

LED panels, downlights, track and display lighting, and controls such as sensors and zoned switching. Our LED lighting service explains the savings.

Data and network cabling

Network points, patch panels and cabling to Wi-Fi access points, run with the power work so the walls are opened once. More on data cabling in Takapuna.

Switchboards and distribution boards

Upgrades and additions when a tenancy outgrows its board or a fit-out adds circuits.

Heating and cooling

Heat pumps for small offices, shops and consulting rooms, installed and wired.

Tiger tails

Brightly coloured covers fitted over overhead lines, to warn builders, scaffolders and drivers of tall vehicles working nearby.

Inspections and certificates on commercial jobs

New Zealand sorts prescribed electrical work into three risk categories. Repairs and like-for-like replacements are low risk. Most installation work, such as new circuits and alterations, is general work. Some work is high risk, and the Electrical Workers Registration Board explains that high-risk work must be inspected, including mains work such as connecting new mains at a switchboard, along with medical, hazardous-area and other specialist installations.

On a commercial job that line can be crossed when a fit-out involves new supply to a tenancy or changes at the main board. Where the work needs an inspection, we arrange a licensed electrical inspector, and all completed work is tested and certified before we hand it over. Keep those certificates with your lease documents: a landlord, an insurer or the next tenant may ask for them.

Keeping your business open

Electrical work on a trading business is a question of timing as much as wiring. Tell us your trading hours, which circuits run the things you cannot be without, such as tills, servers, chillers and security, and when deliveries or staff arrive. We will plan with you when the power needs to be off and for how long, and keep that window as short as the job allows.

When something fails without warning, our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tell us which circuits your business cannot trade without when you call, so those are the first ones back. See our 24/7 emergency electrician page for what to check first.

Commercial electrical questions

Do you work on shop and office fit-outs?

Yes. We wire fit-outs and alterations for offices, shops and hospitality venues, and can work alongside your builder, shopfitter and data supplier so the electrical work lands at the right point in the programme.

Will my fit-out need an electrical inspection?

Only if part of it is high-risk work, such as mains work at the switchboard. General installation work like new circuits does not need one. When an inspection is required we arrange a licensed electrical inspector.

Can you work in a building that is still trading?

Yes. We plan shutdowns around your hours and keep the circuits your business depends on running for as long as possible while the work is done.

Do you handle body corporate commercial buildings?

Yes. Office and retail units can be unit titles too, and then the same rules about shared services and alterations apply. Our apartment electrician page explains how they work.

Can you fit tiger tails for our building site?

Yes. Tiger tails are brightly coloured covers fitted over overhead lines so that anyone working nearby can see them. Tell us the site address and which lines are close to the scaffolding, cranes or vehicles.
