Data and fibre

Data cabling and fibre wiring in Takapuna

Wi-Fi is convenient, but plenty of things work better on a cable: a desk that is on video calls all day, a smart TV, or a Wi-Fi access point at the far end of the house. We run data cabling and network points for Takapuna offices, apartments and houses, from the fibre connection to the rooms that need it.

A suburb where the internet comes ashore

Takapuna has an unusual place in New Zealand's internet. The Southern Cross undersea cable was brought ashore here in 1999, and in 2021 the Southern Cross NEXT cable made its landfall at Takapuna Beach as well, a cable its owners said would almost double New Zealand's international connectivity. The suburb has taken to the idea: the council's centre plan records a group of local businesses promoting Takapuna, under the name Techapuna, as a home for IT firms.

None of that helps much if the connection inside your building is a single router in a cupboard and a Wi-Fi signal that fades two rooms away. That last part, from the fibre connection point to the desks, screens and access points that need it, is where we come in. Data cabling is often done alongside other work, so if you are also renovating, adding LED lighting or moving power points, we can run everything while the walls and ceilings are open.

Cabling for Takapuna offices

In an office the aim is a tidy, labelled system that the next person can understand. We run cable from a central patch panel or comms cabinet out to each desk, meeting room, printer and ceiling access point, label both ends, and test each run once it is in. We also provide the power the cabinet itself needs, so the network equipment is not hanging off a power board on the floor.

If you are moving into a new tenancy or reorganising a floor, it is worth planning data and power together. Our commercial electrician page covers the rest of a fit-out, and we are happy to work with the IT company that will set up your network.

Fibre and network points in rented homes and apartments

If you rent, the rules on fibre are on your side. Tenancy Services explains that tenants can ask in writing for fibre broadband to be installed, and the landlord must agree if it can be done at no cost to them, unless an exemption applies, such as harm to the building's structure, weathertightness or character, or major renovations starting within 90 days. The landlord has 21 days to respond. The fibre connection itself is put in by the network provider; extra network points or a wall-mounted TV inside a rental need the landlord's agreement first, so ask for it in writing.

In an apartment building, the Unit Titles Act counts the cables that bring internet to the units as infrastructure, and the body corporate must look after any that serve more than one unit, so changes to that shared cabling involve it. Cabling inside your own unit, such as a point beside the TV or a cable to a spare-room office, is normally yours to arrange. Our apartment electrician page explains the difference.

What we can cable

Network points

Wall outlets for desks, TVs, gaming consoles and home offices, cabled back to one central point.

Patch panels and comms cabinets

A tidy home for the cabling and the network gear, with power supplied to it.

Wi-Fi access points

Cable run to ceiling or wall positions so access points can cover the whole home or office.

TVs and home entertainment

Televisions mounted on the wall, cables hidden, and aerials installed or repaired.

Data cabling questions

Is cabling still worth it if I have good Wi-Fi?

For many homes Wi-Fi is enough. Cabling earns its place for things that stay put and need a steady connection, such as a home office, a TV, or access points that spread Wi-Fi to the far rooms.

Can you install the fibre connection itself?

The fibre connection to the property is installed by the network provider your internet company books. We take over from the connection point, running cable inside to where you need it.

I rent my apartment. Can I ask for fibre?

Yes. Ask your landlord in writing. They must agree if it can be installed at no cost to them and no exemption applies, and they have 21 days to respond. In an apartment building the body corporate may also need to be involved.

Can you cable a whole office floor?

Yes, from a single meeting room to a full floor, with the power for your comms cabinet and workstations done at the same time.

Can you mount my TV on the wall and hide the cables?

Yes. We mount televisions on the wall, run the power and the network or aerial cable out of sight behind it, and can add a power point at the right height so nothing hangs below the screen.
